Introduction to Italian Cinema

Italian Cinema has always been recognized as being the creme de la creme of International Cinema. One fact that demonstrates its success it the Oscars. Italy is still the country in the world that has received the most Oscars for best foreign langauge film. Of course, the oscars are not always the best source, but it does say a lot.

With Great Movie Directors like Federico Fellini Italy has managed to capture the attention of the whole world. When browing to top lists of websites like IMDb there is a small chance that you do not find at least 1 or 2 Italian Classics.

Itaian Cinema is of course also famous for the westerns it has produced. They jokingly named them 'Spaghetti Westerns' of which The Good, The Bad and the Ugly is a prime Example. Another we highly recommend is For A Few Dollars more.

Of course you should also see a few Federico Fellini films. It is best to start off with his all-time classic. If you like this one you can decide to continue your Italian cinema education. We are of course talking about Eight and A half in which a movie director jumps into his imagination. The film received an enormous amount of Awards. Including 2 Oscars. Federico Fellini himself has won an imperssive 14 Academy Awards. So it is not surprising that many people consider him one of the best movie directors of all time. At least it explains why people love to name when they are asked who their favorite director is.

Our absolute favorite Italian Movie is not by Federico Fellini but by Giuseppe Dornatore. Nuovo Cinema paradiso ranks high on every movie list. On europeanmovies.org it is not only the best Italian movie, but also the very best European Film. According to many critics it is the best Art House film ever made. It is also rewarded with a best foreign language film oscar.

The best Modern Italian Classics are probably two films. One is more a miniseries but is counted as a Film. It is Meglio Gioventu - or The Best of Youth. It is very long but it will be worth the watch. The second Italian modern classic worth watching is of course La Vita E Bella or Life is Beautiful. In this great film a father makes his son believe that the German Concentration camps are just one big game. For this film Roberto Benigni won an Oscar for best Actor. It is also interesting that he directed the film.
